Anna C. Brewton (Cola)
Anna C. Brewton (Cola), age 94 of Trooper, PA, whose life journeys included stops as a soprano with the Cosmopolitan Opera of Philadelphia, a candy packer for the Whitman Chocolate company and a Bell Telephone operator - but who counted her relationship with the Lord, her faith and her many friends above all things material - embarked on her final journey when she passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, April 2, 2021.
Anna was born in Philadelphia on April 22, 1926, to Arthur J. and Mary Cola. She was raised from the age of eight by her step-mother, Ethel.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Robert Brewton, and her sister, Clare (Cola).
At the age of 18, Anna sang “The Merry Widow” at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia as a member the Cosmopolitan Opera. A producer wanted her to travel to New York to perform, but her mother forbade her from doing so because of her age.
Her first job was at the Whitman Chocolate company where she faithfully boxed the nougat chocolates, but heeded the constant reminders to not sneak any candy!
Realizing a life of eating chocolate was more fulfilling than packing it, she obtained her beautician’s license and spent four years in that field.
Bell Telephone came calling in 1949, and Anna was an operator - where dresses, hats and gloves were mandatory - for eight years before moving to the Personnel Department where she spent the next 32 years before retiring at the age of 63 in 1989.
Anna and her husband Bob were active with the Methacton Music Theater group for 25 years and among her favorite musical performances were Fiddler on the Roof and My Fair Lady. Lasting friendships were made and she was part of a group of some 25 performers that would travel to area nursing homes to provide entertainment.
She was also a member of the Lower Providence Presbyterian Church the past 10 years and appreciated the love, support and friendship of the many friends she made through her worship.
Anna’s interests were far and wide: a homemaker who enjoyed cooking; a traveler who loved hopping in the car for long journeys with her husband; an entertainer who liked big family gatherings no matter the holiday; a beach-goer who enjoyed visiting her summer home in Wildwood Crest. And as anyone who knew her, Anna was a animal lover, always donating to her favorite shelter and care groups, and a tremendous care-giver to her beloved cat, Cuddles, and the felines that predeceased him, Huff, Puff and Sandy.
Anna is survived by her nephew George Brewton (Dawn) and nieces Annette Evans (Elden) and Denise Rolli (Alan) and several grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her niece Pamela Bucca (William).
Family and friends are invited to Anna’s Life Celebration on Saturday, April 10 between 10 - 11 AM at Lower Providence Presbyterian Church in Eagleville. Services will immediate follow, but seating is limited because of COVID restrictions and registration is required online at the church site ( www.lppcmin.org ).
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Anna’s memory to Lower Providence Presbyterian Church would be appreciated.
