SPRINGFIELD » Cameron Dennis kept driving and his path to goal never closed.

“I picked up the ball around half and I ran down and I was expected a D-pole to slide to me,” the Springfield-Montco senior said. “So, I was just kind of jogging to pass to the open man and nobody slid so I just shot it and it went it.”

Starting his run close to midfield, Dennis dashed by one North Penn defender, cut between a pair of converging Knights and with still no resistance unleashed a shot that found the back of the net to break a 7-7 tie with 6:56 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The goal proved to be the deciding tally in the Suburban One League nonconference matchup as the host Spartans held off the Knights the remainder of regulation as they rallied to earn an 8-7 victory Monday afternoon.

“We were down 7-6 heading to the fourth and our coach said, just play our game, take our time,” Dennis said. “We still had 12 minutes, two goals is nothing in 12 minutes so we just took our time, passed it around and right after we had the tying goal we just had the momentum with us.”

Dennis had a game-high three goals while Trey DuBose and Luke Gozzard both scored twice for Springfield (3-3, 2-1 SOL American), which snapped a two-game skid.

“I don’t know, they just kind of pulled themselves together,” Spartans coach Hank Resch said. “I mean, they kept the poise and kept playing well. I was afraid when they came back and tied it that we’d kind of – they went up one actually – take a sag but they hung in there. It was good.”

North Penn (5-4, 2-2 SOL National) spent most of the contest chasing down the Spartans after falling into a 3-0 hole less than four minutes into the game. The Knights pulled even twice in the first half before finally taking the lead in the third — scoring the quarter’s last three goals to go up 7-6 on Declan Lanier’s strike at 53.7 seconds.

Austin Maggioncalda, however, came around the net and found an open Gozzard at the far right post for the equalizer at 9:04 in the fourth. Dennis netted the goahead goal a little more than two minutes later.

“I think the game of lacrosse is all about momentum and unfortunately we only had the momen
