Company culture today may actually be the most complex aspect of running a business. An almost unlimited number of variables need to be considered when trying to get a group of people to work together in a way that has a positive impact on people’s lives and consistently produces great results.

Organizational culture affects all aspects of a business and alignment of workplace culture with employees, makes workers more likely to feel comfortable, supported, and valued. Leaders must identify and focus on the most important element of the organization’s culture in order to create the biggest, positive impact on company culture in the shortest possible time.

A good organizational culture provides employees with a relaxed working environment, and congenial interpersonal relationships in order to fully develop and use their abilities. A positive culture allows employees to have a sense of mission and feel responsibility, and work towards the overall goal of the organization.

Benefits of a good company culture

RETENTION OF TALENT » A strong company culture attracts better talent and, even more importantly, retains that talent. When people feel like they belong to an organization, they are more likely to stay for the long term. That means lower turnover, fewer new hires to deal with, and better chemistry among the team.

Positive workplace culture attracts talent, drives engagement, impacts happiness and satisfaction, and affects performance. The personality of a business is influenced by everything. Leadership, management, workplace practices, policies, people, and more impact culture significantly.

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY » Individual workers will be more likely to set and meet goals of their own when a corporate culture prioritizes setting and meeting goals. The senior management team must truly care about employees and consistently demonstrate that care with high levels of trust, cooperation, service and caring for team members. The results of those actions will be a company culture that facilitates sustainable performance.

BRAND ENHANCEMENT » Corporate culture also adds to a company’s brand identity. When employees are treated well and have a cheerful corporate atmosphere, customers will see the company as a confident, spirited and generous brand. Depending on the company’s target demographics, that could be a major benefit for sales and customer loyalty.

Millennials are driving workplace cultural change

The millennial generation is now the driver of changes in the workplace for the near future. Companies must attract millennial talent because without that talent, company growth may stagnate and could eventually experience a talent shortage. Millennials desire a strong positive company culture on one dimension or another more than anything else when deciding which company they choose to join. If a company does not have a strong or appealing company culture, the company will not win in today’s recruiting war for talent.

The bottom line is that culture is vitally important to business success because it shapes the company identity and therefore employee growth which leads the way for success and a lasting legacy.

A closing thought — “Culture is like the wind. It is invisible; yet its effect can be seen and felt.” Bryan Walker, toy inventor from Bend, Oregon.
