TULPEHOCKEN » Dieffenbach’s Potato Chips Inc. has launched a new product in its Uglies Kettle Chips line-up of snacks. Uglies Sweets is a new upcycled sweet potato chip making its debut this month in a limited number of Sam’s Club locations.

The Berks County-based snack manufacturer uses imperfect sweet potatoes to craft the “crunchy, and lightly salted” sweet potato chips.

Uglies Sweets will be available in 15-ounce packaging at select Sam’s Clubs stores for a limited time, and 1.5-ounce and 5.5-ounce bags will be available later this month at select retailers. According to a spokesman for Dieffenbach’s, the chips will initially be distributed in the southeastern U.S., and will not be available in Sam’s Club locations in the tricounty region. However, the new product will be available at Dieffenbach’s factory store, 51 Host Road in Tulpehocken Township.

Uglies Kettle Chips are crafted in small batches using potatoes with slight imperfections that might otherwise be discarded — potatoes that are too large or too small, have the wrong color or wrong sugar contents, or are farmer surplus — according to information on the company’s website.

According to the company, 26% of U.S. produce is discarded for cosmetic reasons, with 6 billion pounds of produce unharvested or unsold for aesthetic reasons. Uglies Kettle Chips have been committed to supporting farmers, reducing food waste and fighting hunger since its inception in 2017, according to a press release.

Earlier this year, the Uglies brand was redesigned to include a new logo, website and package design. For more information on Uglies Kettle Chips, visit www.ugliessnacks.com.
