50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 2 No. 8 Thursday, Feb. 23, 1967
The City of Pea Ridge finds itself faced with a request from the State of Arkansas Highway Department to change from angle to parallel parking along both sides of Pickens Road (Arkansas 94 west from the four-way stop and Arkansas 72 east from the fourway stop). The request also included one block on each side of Davis Street.
Four million pounds of tomatoes will be needed for this year’s operation of the Pea Ridge Canning Co., according to Frank Strode, owner of the cannery.
Pea Ridge Mayor Jack Musteen reminded area residents not using the city water the annual $6 assessment for fire protection is now due. Notices have been mailed out to farmers and others living within a few miles of Pea Ridge city limits who would find it necessary to summon the local fire department should a fire occur on the property.

The senior Blackhawk boys captured wins in their final two games of regular season play last week, boosting their season mark to 12 wins and nine losses and presenting Coach Jim Roe with his first winning season as chief mentor of the senior boys. The junior and senior ’Hawks both defeated St. Paul and Winslow, extending the junior squad’s perfect season record to 23-0.
Construction is underway on a new business and a new headquarters for an old business in Pea Ridge. The new business is Pea Ridge Florist which is being started by Delores Hall and Tom and Penny Wimmer. Ground breaking for the florist shop began Monday on the lot on the northwest corner of Curtis and McCullough streets. The existing business which is expanding its operation with a new building is the Battlefield Cabinet Company owned by John Tillman.
The Pea Ridge TOPS Club held its annual awards ceremony Thursday night at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and crowned the chapter queen, Mrs. Nonie Woods. Mrs. Woods lost 43 pounds to reach her weight goal, and then maintained that goal for 13 weeks to reach her KOPS status.

Higher grade and graduation requirements, better use of available funds, providing special education services in Pea Ridge instead of transferring students out of the district and overemphasis on athletics were among the issues addressed Monday night by all three candidates for the school board seat soon to be vacated by Andy Buck. John L. Brown, Bob Harmon and Jim Henson addressed a sparse crowd at the PTA meeting at the school cafetorium.
Harry and Judy Palmer, Pea Ridge, have been selected as American Institute of Cooperation’s Young Farmer Associate Trustees for 1987. The Palmers operate an incorporated family farm consisting of a dairy farm in Arkansas and a row crop farm in Missouri.
The Blackhawk Salute went to Players of the Week Laura Wolgomott and Brian Wright, junior high players who were both named to the All-District Tournament Team.
Platoon opened at Rogers Malco Twin movie theater.

Many factors contribute to the City of Pea Ridge’s water loss according to city Water Department superintendent Robert Button. Button told members of the City Council on Feb. 18, “We are doing every little thing we can possibly think of to help.” At the January council meeting, it was reported that the city’s water loss was at 39 percent in 1996. In order to lower the water loss in 1997, employees of the Water Department are targeting three areas: leaks, meters and human error.
Effective Friday, it will be more difficult for people younger than 18 to buy cigarettes. The onus is on the seller. Dave Montgomery, owner of Marvin’s IGA in Pea Ridge, said, “Effective Feb. 28, we have to check the ID of anyone under 27.” Montgomery said, “By Aug. 28, there can be no self-service cigarettes. All cigarettes will have to be behind the counter and kept secured.”
Carol and Jeff Plunkett of Garfield announced the birth of their son, Brandon Scott, on Feb. 14, born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rogers.

High winds and dry grass fueled flames emanating from a house fire on Guthrie Road just north of Arkansas 72 northeast of town. The four-bedroom home of Lanny and Linda Price was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived. It was completely destroyed.
Nine-year-old Ashton Stacy was crossing the street in front of her house to board the school bus when she was hit by a car driven by Eula Reynolds of Garfield. Pea Ridge Ambulance transported the youth to Northwest Medical Center, where she was treated for a broken leg and later released.
The Pea Ridge Junior High cheerleaders won first place in regional competition and in state. They won first place against Lincoln Junior High at Arkansas’ ACCA Regional Competition on Jan. 27 in Bentonville, and, one week later, were named grand champions of the ACCA State Competition after performing a flawless routine.
Winners of the Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Chili Cook-Off were Oak View Animal Clinic, first place; Ruby’s Packaging, second place; and Flying RF Feed Store, third place. The People’s Choice Award went to Northshore Realty, and the award for Best Presentation was given to Seligman Great Area Chamber of Commerce.
