Five things to do in downtown Shreveport

- Liz Swaine Guest Columnist

It’s back, it’s big, and it’s bad (but in a good sort of way). PrizeFest returns and our next two weekends will be plumb full of fun. Frankenstein walks Texas Street and you can come face to face with the monster and his bride. The sun disappears, art reappears, and Black Restaurant Week kicks off with a little of all that. It’s a great weekend to be part of our #CoolDowntown.

1 It begins. PrizeFest kicks off its 2023 magic at the Remington ‘Music Prize’ Garage. 12 bands will compete Friday and Saturday night for glory, fame and $10,000. On Sunday morning, six designers will tangle for bucks and bravos at the Fashion Prize Brunch at Phoenix 2.0, and this is only the start of Week 1! When: Fri., Oct. 13- Sun., Oct. 15, various hours. Where: downtown Shreveport. Cost: $40/$350. Info: prizefest.com

2 October is a spooky month and Robinson Film Center is bringing full scale heebie jeebies to bear! On Saturday, their 30 Days of Fright puts us face to face with the monster who towers above them all in 1935’s The Bride of Frankenstein. See how Boris Karloff brings this piecemeal being to sympathetic life and hear an intro from Academy Award winner William Joyce, too. When: Sat., Oct. 14, 8 pm. Where: RFC, 617 Texas St. Cost: $8.50/$10.50. Info: robinsonfilmcenter.org

3 Don’t be shocked when the sun fades from view Saturday. It’s the 2023 Annular Solar Eclipse that you can (safely) watch with friends at Sci-Port Discovery Center. Join other astronomy buffs from the rooftop Averett Observatory, take part in activities and learn all sorts of fun science about our closest star. When: Sat., Oct. 14, 10 am2 pm. Where: 820 Clyde Fant Parkway. Cost: $10. Info: sci-port.org

4 It’s all about the art Sunday at Bailey Gallery, 214 Texas Street. Come and be amazed at local talent at the Hoover Watercolor Society Fall Exhibit. See original art & talk to the artists at the exhibit’s opening reception. When: Sunday, Oct. 15, 2-4 pm. Where: 214 Texas St. Cost: Free. Info: FB/bailey gallery

5 Start off Black Restaurant Week in a big way with a smorgasbord of treats at A Taste of MS KICK (Milam Street Kitchen Incubator & Community Kitchen.) Island Vibez, The Smoking Oyster, Big Nate’s BBQ, Vegans on the Run, and others will be there passing out the tasty items they do so well. When: Sunday, Oct. 15, 2-6 pm. Where: 1210 Milam St. Cost: $20. Info: Eventbrite/taste of ms kick
