The Sympathizer

Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, this seven-episode espionage thriller and cross-culture satire is about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese Communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over. Sandra Oh costars and Robert Downey Jr. plays multiple roles in the series.

Turner Classic Movies debuted 30 years ago today, on April 14, 1994. The network is celebrating all day (starting very early) with a marathon of films featuring historical introductions from beloved host Robert Osborne, who passed away in 2017. Throughout the day, fans will be treated to new insights from TCM’s five current hosts to give context to Osborne’s intros. The day’s centerpiece will feature an airing of
(1939), which was the first film to be broadcast and introduced on TCM. Among other highlights are films that were featured as part of Osborne’s “Bob’s Picks” segment, including his intros to them:
