Both parties are destroying education opportunities

Articles penned by several newspaper columnists have assailed Democrats for dismissing concerns of black people.

Their assessments offer credence to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump who said black people have nothing to lose by honoring him with their vote, a kind of “you suffered the rest now try the best” approach.

Trump added bombast to his invitation with a promise that if enough blacks help him win the presidency now that 95 percent of them would help him gain a second term.

The truth remains that black people made valuable progress until a step away from education, an abandonment that paralleled U.S. slavery initiatives that prevented slaves from learning.

North Carolina and other states enacted laws that punished any free person who attempted to teach slaves reading and writing.

And any free person who “shall give or sell to such slave or slaves any books or pamphlets, shall be liable to indictment in any court of record in this State having jurisdiction thereof, and upon conviction, shall, at the discretion of the court, if a white man or woman, be fined not less than one hundred dollars, nor more than two hundred dollars, or imprisoned,” 1831 legislation explained.

Punishment for a free person of color who dispensed learning initiatives meant fines, imprisonment or a good whipping, greater than twenty lashes but not to exceed thirty-nine.”

Short version? Slave owners did not want their human property discovering that education served as a linchpin to revolution and super freedom.

This dummy-down system occurs in Trenton as four libraries closed with no attempt from Democrats or Republicans to save or reopen these learning facilities. In fact, they shuttered schools and laid off teachers as federal dollars were made available to rebuild police forces.

Politicians prefer invest in military equipment for police departments to control an ignorant, impoverished society rather than backing education and employment initiatives.

An advantage exists for all political leaders if the electorate discounts learning, a point made by Trump when he voiced his “love” for “poorly educated” people.

Hillary Clinton, his Democratic presidential opponent, also gains an advantage from societal unintelligence.

Frederick Douglass, the famous abolitionist, believed that the ability to read and write represented the first step towards freedom.

“Education means emancipation; it means light and liberty,” Douglass wrote.

If you struggle in the United States but desire a better life, especially for your children, give education a real chance.

Don’t wait on Democrats, Republicans and other snake oil political sales representatives from third or fourth parties, especially if they are not discussing fixing education and opportunity.

They all want you stupid.
