A Trenton outreach organization facing financial struggle received a $30,000 grant that will help continue valuable work in the Latino community.
Maria Juega, Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF) executive director, praised funding offered by the Princeton Area Community Foundation.
Juega, in a released statement, noted the grant will help LALDEF continue “a mission of service, education, and advocacy on behalf of Latinos in Central New Jersey.”
“This valuable operating grant will enable LALDEF to buttress essential programs in English language and computer instruction, and financial and civic literacy.”
The additional funding allows expansion of the group’s Community ID Card and Futuro college readiness programs.
“Both are designed to provide new immigrants and low-income Latino/a families and individuals with the means to enjoy lives of meaning, dignity, and high educational aspirations,” Juega explained.
The LALDEF Board of Trustees expressed appreciation for the Princeton Area Community Foundation, saying that the support arrives at a time “when government funding for social service nonprofits is declining generally.”
The Princeton Area Community Foundation promotes philanthropy and builds community across Mercer County and central New Jersey.
The PACF helps people and companies make effective charitable gifts and awards grants to nonprofits.
Since its founding in 1991, the Community Foundation has grown into an organization with more than $120 million in assets and made grants of over $75 million, including $16 million in 2015.
