Flath’s free kick gives Rider men’s soccer OT win in opener

VILLANOVA, PA. >> Christian Flath curled in a free kick 8:58 into the first overtime and the Rider men’s soccer team erased an early deficit to open its season with a 2-1 victory over Villanova.

The defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion went behind to a 51st minute penalty but senior Adrien Huss equalized seven minutes later.

Flath hit the winner from 25 yards, marking the senior’s 24th career goal.

The Broncs (1-0) are back in action next Friday at La Salle.

CREIGHTON 2, RUTGERS 0

PISCATAWAY >> Lucas Stauffer and Riggs Lennon scored for the seventh-ranked Blue Jays after the Scarlet Knights’ Ryan Peterson was sent off in the 60th minute.

David Greczek made eight saves for 25th-ranked Rutgers (0-1).

Women’s Soccer

RUTGERS 1, SAINT JOSEPH’S 0 PISCATAWAY >> Amanda Visco scored in the 75th minute, giving the 22nd-ranked Scarlet Knights (2-0-1) a victory over the visiting Hawks (1-1).

Former Hightstown standout Dakota Mills went 84 minutes for St. Joe’s, registerin­g four shots. PRINCETON 3, FORDHAM 1 PRINCETON >> Tyler Lussi picked up where she left off, bagging two goals in as many minutes in the Tigers’ win over the Rams.

Lussi, the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year after a 15-goal season, began her senior campaign with tallies in the eighth and ninth minute, respective­ly.

Mimi Asom netted a third for Princeton (1-0) in the 47th minute.

Field Hockey

LEHIGH 2, RIDER 1 BETHLEHEM, PA. >> The Broncs (01) had their six-game winning streak against the Mountain Hawks (0-1) snapped as Lehigh edged out a home victory in the season opener.

Jessica Randazzo tallied the lone Rider goal in the first half. BUCKNELL 2, RUTGERS 0 LEWISBURG, PA. >> Goals by Brittany Willwerth and Marisa Morakis gave the Bison (1-0) a win over the Scarlet Knights (0-1).

Rutgers managed just seven shots, only one of which was on target.
