Robbinsville’s Fox hits century mark

- By Rich Fisher

HAMILTON >> Logan Fox wasn’t about to provide any drama in his pursuit of a milestone.

The Robbinsville High senior pinned Dante Hawkins in 28 seconds to post his 100th career win, which highlighted the unbeaten Ravens’ 50-24 victory at Steinert Wednesday night.

“Yeah, I just wanted to get it over with,” said Fox, who wrestled at 120 pounds. “No reason to hang out. I’m just happy to get it done.”

Fox was able to relish it a bit more after the match, as he was presented with a 100th win sign by has teammates.

“This means a lot, for him,” Flynn said. “He’s put in a ton of work, he wrestles all year round, goes to all the tournaments. He’s one of the hardest working guys in our room; he does all the extras. He’s at Elite (club) all the time, doing everything to get better. He lives and breathes wrestling and it says a lot about him and what he’s done over three-plus years for our school.”

Fox, who is now 100-21, admitted he began thinking of 100 wins after getting 29 as a freshman. He has won two district and two county titles, but was thwarted from getting to states last year when he was leveled by the flu during regions.

He feels hitting the century mark equals winning his championships along with the Ravens victory over Hopewell last year.

“To put in all this work, now getting this 13 years later, it feels great, it’s a huge weight off my shoulders,” he said. “I’m just looking to break the school record now (of 121). I definitely think I can get it. I’m just working toward my goals of getting to states, that’s all it’s about.”

Fox’s bout was one of just eight contested on the night, as Steinert forfeited at 106, 113 and 152, while Robbinsville did likewise at 180, 195 and 220. The Ravens won seven matches with Jordan Goodarz’s pin being Steinert’s lone triumph.

“I still wasn’t too disappointed,” Steinert coach Adam Jankos said. “We lost by 26 points, but I had some young guys in there wrestling, and some of them I was impressed with. I just saw some nice things.”

Despite holes in his lineup. Flynn’s team is now 6-0. He got pins from Jack Shea and prized sophomore Garrett Bilgrav and major decisions from Sean Bohan and Brent Grocott.

“They’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do,” the coach said. “They work hard in the room, they know our backs are against the wall, they know we need bonus points because we’re giving up those forfeits, and they’ve responded. They continue to do it match after match and they continue to put us in a good spot.”

Part of the reason is Fox’s presence in the wrestling room.

“He sets the bar high,” Flynn said. “He’s doing those extra things, the guys look up to him. They want to do those extra things. They want to reach and set some more goals like he has. They want to see themselves as region place-winners, state place-winners and 100-match winners.”

For one night, at least, they were content watching their teammate join that coveted century club.
