Childrens Hope For Kids receives major support from local schools

- L.A. Parker Columnist

If the Christine’s Hope For Kids organization members love being overwhelmed by kindness then several local schools should take pleasure in swamping them with acts of love and affection.

Students and faculty of Bear Tavern Elementary School partnered with CHFK during a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day of service event that included a collection of toothpaste, tooth brushes and reading books for a pajama bag and blanket bag outreach with those items distributed to local shelters.

Other collections included cans of soup, knitted scarves and over 1400 gently used reading books and decorated canvas bags for the CHFK reading literacy program.

Plus, each student received a giving bank and after several weeks, students and faculty raised $3,636.29.

“We matched their collection with $3,000 for a grand total of 6,636.29,” said CHFK Jean Gianacaci, mother of Christine Gianacaci. “The students took a vote and chose Mercer Street Friends Food Bank to help kids have meals during the summer months.”

Three hundred kids living in shelters and temporary housing received either a pajama bag, blanket bag, soup bag or book bag. And hundreds more will be able to receive meals this summer thanks to Bear Tavern Elementary School efforts.

Eighty third graders from Hopewell Elementary School collected books and designed tote bags as their contribution to CHFK.

“Impressed by their generosity and happy to announce that the books and bags will be donated to the Center for Child and Family Development,” Gianacaci said.

Finally, Hopewell Elementary School secondgraders participated in CHFK’s “Pennies from Heaven” initiative. They collected pennies and other coins which resulted in a $911.00 contribution.

Christine’s Hope For Kids added $1,000 and students voted to make a donation to Mercer Street Friends Food Bank. Brian Peterson from Mercer Street Friends Food Bank accepted the donation personally and explained to students how his organization impacts local families.

Christine’s Hopes For Kids honors the life of Christine Gianacaci. Ms. Gianacaci, a Hopewell resident and child advocate, and several other Lynn University students and faculty members perished while on a food delivery mission to Haiti in January, 2010.

The “Journey of Hope” mission ended tragically when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed hundreds of thousands and left homeless more than 1.5 million residents. ************** Isles Garden Support Network ramps activities as Spring allows for the 2017 outdoor planting season.
