TRENTON >> A city man was arrested over the weekend after police allegedly found him in possession of a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun while investigating a shooting.

Salaam Felton, 27, is accused of leading police on a foot chase after they found him in an alley following a report of shots fired.

Police say Officers Sh’quanah Lopez and Anthony Villanueva were en route to the 500 block of Gladstone Avenue Saturday to investigate a reported shooting when they were told two male suspects ran into an alley after shooting at a car.

When the officers arrived on scene, police say, they saw Felton pacing in the alley. When Felton saw police, he allegedly stopped pacing but then quickly walked toward the rear of a building.

Police then ordered Felton to stop, and he briefly complied with their orders. But when the officers told Felton to remove his hands from his waistband, police say, he refused and ran.

Officials say a foot chase ensued with Felton leading Villanueva over a couple fences, into several yards and alleyways. During the chase, police say, Felton tossed an object into a rear yard in the 300 block of Cleveland Avenue and continued running.

Police eventually tackled Felton onto the ground at the corner of Gladstone and Cleveland. Police then retrieved the object Felton allegedly tossed and learned it was a handgun equipped with an extended magazine and loaded with a dozen hollow-point bullets.

Police also found shell casings and projectiles on Gladstone Avenue where the shooting happened. No one was struck by gunfire.

Felton is charged with numerous weapons offenses, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and obstructing the administration of law.
