Milligan named MET Coach of the Year
Lynn Milligan and the Rider women’s basketball team earned more recognition on Tuesday for the best season in program history.
Already named the top coach in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Milligan was honored as the Maggie Dixon Division I Coach of the Year by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.
Milligan, in her 10th season, guided the Broncs to a 24-9 overall record and a first ever appearance in both the MAAC championship game and WNIT. Those 24 wins were the second highest total in program history and the most against Division I competition.
Rider also earned the No. 2 seed in the conference, finishing with 16 victories, its highest total since joining the league in 1997.
“There are so many terrific programs lead by amazing coaches in this organization,” Milligan told the school’s athletic website. “I am honored to represent them and Rider women’s basketball this season. By having an amazing staff and group of young ladies with a common goal who are willing to work hard every day, good things can happen.”
The Coach of the Year award is named for the late Maggie Dixon, who tragically passed away in 2006 at the age of 28 after completing her first season as head coach at Army.
Two Rider players were also recognized. Senior guard Robin Perkins was named first team All-MET and senior center Julia Duggan was selected to the second team.
Perkins, the MAAC Player of the Year, averaged 15.5 points despite missing the final nine contests with a foot injury.
Duggan recorded 12 doubledoubles, finishing the season at 11.8 points and a league-leading 8.5 rebounds per contest. She stepped up without Perkins, posting 17.6 points and 14 rebounds over the last six games.
