TRENTON >> Cooper, Roberto Clemente, Father Rocco, and Martin Luther King, Jr. pools will open to city residents on July 1 with improvements that will enhance the experience for residents seeking to beat the heat this summer, Mayor Eric E. Jackson announced Wednesday.

“More than a thousand residents per day enjoy our city’s pools during a summer season that begins on July 1 and ends on September 5,” said Mayor Jackson. “Improving the quality of these facilities has been on my to-do list for quite some time.”

Cooper Pool in South Trenton on Union Street will see its skimmers—devices that capture floating debris such as leaves, twigs, and dirt—replaced. Also, additional pool ladders will be added, LED lighting will be installed for increased security at night, benches will be stripped and refinished, new lifeguard chairs will be installed, and the pool house will get a fresh coat of paint.

The interior of Robert Clemente Pool on Academy Street will be power-washed and painted, wood benches will be stripped and refinished, and new lights will be installed to deter vandalism at night when the pool is closed for the evening.

The pumping system at Father Rocco Pool on North New Willow Street will be replaced, the pool house will be repainted, the interior of the pool itself will be power-washed and repainted, and the benches will be stripped and refinished.

The interior of Martin Luther King, Jr. Pool on Brunswick Avenue will be sandblasted and repainted, and impellers on the pumping system’s motors will be replaced.

The pool at Hetzel Field Park remains closed, pending $2.4 million in capital improvements that is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2017.

The pools will be managed again this year by the YMCA of Trenton.

The city’s Division of Recreation organizes the outdoor pool program in addition to other year-round, family-friendly recreational activities. The program for this summer includes: youth sporting events, July 10-August 11; PlayBall at the Trenton Thunder, August 21; summer family trips, July 15 & 29 and August 12 & 26; a lunchtime concert series, July 6-August 17; Movies Under the Stars, July 15-August 28; and National Night Out, August 1. Residents can phone (609) 989-3628 to learn more about the schedule and locations of events, or download the brochure from trentonnj.org.
