JD’s Soul Food Kitchen brings comfort and fellowship to Trenton
Jacob Dormevil Sr., the owner of what is now JD’s Soul Food Kitchen is a native of New Jersey. He was born in Newark and lived in Trenton for over 15 years. His story is one of homelessness, survival and determination.
Jacob credits Andrew Turner and Cyrano Green with helping him appreciate hard work and a sound work ethic. He was also exposed to other positive role models who were entrepreneurs. The latter is what sparked his desire to become an entrepreneur. Jacob has been a successful businessman and had various types of businesses through the years. JD’s Soul Food Kitchen was birthed after spending some time at his uncle and aunts’ Soul Food Chess House Restaurant. Jacob enjoys cooking for others and feels soul food brings people together for comfort and fellowship.
JD’s Soul Food Kitchen is located where the old Shrimp Boat restaurant once existed, across from City Hall at 312 E. State Street, Trenton, New Jersey. It has always been Jacob’s dream to have a restaurant in this exact location and now that dream
has come to fruition. Jacob chose to rise above his circumstances and not allow his past to dictate his future. Jacob embodies the quote “For of those to whom much is given, much is required.” It is his goal to give back to others as others gave to him.
