Rock North advances in PIAA District One Class AAAAAA

NEWTOWN, PA. >> Behind an excellent pitching performanc­e by hard-throwing sophomore Jenna Khantzian, the Council Rock North softball team beat Boyertown, 3-0, Wednesday in the PIAA District One Class AAAAAA Tournament.

With the victory, the Indians (14-4) advanced to the quarterfin­als for the first time in years and will travel to Coatesvill­e Friday afternoon.

Committed to Virginia Tech, Khantzian fired a sixhitter with six strikeouts. All the Rock North scoring came in the fourth when Riley Sheehy and Lauren Begg singled to bring Taylor Briggs to the plate. Briggs delivered big time with a three-run home run.

“Briggs has really stepped up her game,’’ said Rock North coach John Engelhardt, “And Jenna did a fantastic job. That’s the best defense we played all year. It showed the girls what kind of team they can be when they play good defense. COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 8. NESHAMINY 6 LANGHORNE, PA. >> For the second year in a row, Neshaminy (17-3) was upset in its playoff opener — this time against a team it beat twice during the regular season.

It was a wild game in which Neshaminy tied it with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and tied it again with one run in the eighth before Rock South won it with two in the ninth on a home run by Melanie Wilkinson. Alexis Watkins tied it with a two-run double in the seventh on a play in which what would have been the winning run was barely thrown out at the plate.
