FIGHTING DRUGS
Mercer County Narcotics Task Force conducts proactive drug search at Steinert High School >>
HAMILTON » With less than a week left of school, students at Steinert High School might have been surprised by a K-9 strolling through the hallways.
The Mercer County Narcotics Task Force conducted a scheduled, random drug search on Thursday afternoon at the Hamilton school located at 2900 Klockner Rd. No drugs were found, a spokeswoman for the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said.
“This is a proactive approach between the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the school district,” Hamilton Township School District Superintendent Scott Rocco explained Thursday. “We’re trying to provide and are making sure that we provide our students with a safe learning environment, safe and free of drugs.”
Since Rocco took over as superintendent in May, it is the second random drug search on his watch. One was also conducted in the spring at Nottingham High School. No drugs were found in that search as well, the superintendent said.
Rocco did not know if these types of drug searches occurred in the district before his arrival.
“As a community, we’re all concerned with the issues of drugs in our community and we want to make sure that we’re providing all of our students with a safe learning environment,” Rocco said. “It’s a proactive approach with our prosecutor.”
The last day of school is June 21.
