TRENTON » A daytime shooting on the 200 block of East Hanover Street left a city man injured Saturday morning.

A gunman rushed out of a building, ran up to the victim and fired two shots at close range, striking the victim in the abdomen area about 11:40 a.m., according to a witness at the scene.

Medics rushed the victim to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he was listed in stable condition Saturday afternoon, police said.

The victim, 33, was shot once to the right forearm and once to the buttocks, police said. He was admitted for further medical treatment, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

After firing the shots, the gunman waved his weapon around — terrorizing several witnesses who saw the act of violence — and then he got into a vehicle and fled the scene as a passenger in a car driven by someone else, a witness said in an interview with The Trentonian.

“I hope he makes it,” the witness said of the wounded victim. “It’s always something going on around here.”

The witness did not want to be publicly identified in the newspaper. “The next person he comes for might be me,” the witness said of the at-large gunman.

The area near East Hanover and North Stockton streets is a crime hotspot known for occasional shootings. Trenton Police Saturday afternoon propped up yellow tape at the crime scene and took photos of what appeared to be splattered blood from where the victim was said to be bleeding out.

Police scanners, an active crime scene and two witnesses who spoke with The Trentonian all suggested that a shooting occurred on East Hanover Street late Saturday morning. A Trenton Police spokesman later in the day confirmed a city man was shot twice in the incident.

The victim reported he was on East Hanover, heard gunshots and realized he had been shot, according to Trenton Police Lt. Stephen Varn.

The Mercer County Shooting Response Team was investigating the shooting but no arrests have been announced in the case as of Saturday evening.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact the Trenton Police Confidential Tip Line at (609) 989-3663.
