Home run power could be key for Lawrence

If the Lawrence Little League All-Stars remember to bring their bats to the District 12 Tournament, there’s a good chance they might just do the damage.

Manager Sean Willever said the Lawrence lineup features four or five players who can give it a ride over the fence.

The big bonus in Little League is when you can get a runner or two on and then have a slugger pop one over the fence.

“They can hit,” he said. “They’ll come out and hit as long as they show, but with 12 year olds, you never know.”

Lawrence has arguably the toughest first round game when it opens on Friday night against Nottingham, the district’s most successful team, at the HTRBA Complex in Hamilton. The winner gets either HTRBA or Florence in the winners’ bracket semifinals.

While Willever thinks his club has the ability to put up some crooked numbers, pitching remains a question mark.

“That’s to be seen,” he said. “We’ve got a couple of good starters, but after that, it’s all question marks. We’re going to work with them ... and hopefully everything comes together.”

So far the chemistry is great. “If they’re not getting along, they’re not having fun,” Willever said. “Right now we’ve got four new players who came on board and we’re still getting them to jell.”
