Sullivan, Lawrence roll past Trenton

TRENTON » Ryan Sullivan would go through a fence to help his Lawrence Post 414 baseball team get back into a winning groove.

And that’s practically what Sullivan did Monday at Wetzel Field as Post 414 took on Trenton Posts 93 & 182 in Mercer County American Legion League action.

Sullivan hit the fence behind first base hard while chasing a foul ball on which he was told he had more room to range than he actually did.

But the Lawrence High student bounced back up, returning to his position at first base to finish the game and help Lawrence roll to a 14-0 win over the Schroths.

The victory was the 10th of the summer for manager Jason Zegarski’s team, which should all but guarantee them of a LAWRENCE TRENTON

postseason trip. Yet, with three games still to play over the final two days of the regular season, Post 414 does not want to rest on its laurels as it continues to grow into a continually successful squad.

“This is good,” Sullivan said of the position Lawrence finds itself in. “We’re trying to get some momentum heading into districts. We just have to play hard every game.”

Sullivan should know. Besides his hard-nosed play on defense, the young man who just finished his sophomore year at Lawrence High went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and three runs batted in to give his team as much a boost as Notre Dame High product Jake Kmiec, who was also 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs.

“It’s a lot of fun playing alongside the Notre Dame guys. We get along well and have really grown as a team,” Sullivan said.

That all-for-one attitude is exactly what Trenton manager Xavier Rodriguez also has been trying to instill in his young squad.

The Schroths fell in a 5-0 hole in the first three innings Monday, but then settled down as pitcher Francisco DeJesus retired seven in a row between the third and fifth innings.

The only problem was so did Post 414 pitcher Trevor Delcampe, who actually set down eight in a row between the third and sixth innings. On either side of that streak were hits by Posts 93 & 182 leadoff man Robert Guillen, who doubled in the third and singled and stole second base in the sixth, for two of his team’s three hits.

“They did hit the ball, but we made a lot of mistakes. It’s been happening all season,” Guillen said.

The home team really did not show much trouble with fielding until committing four errors in the seventh inning to help Lawrence bat around in the last two innings to put the game way out of reach.

For Sullivan and Post 414, it was just continuing to go full steam ahead to play as well as they can.
