Mets get 3 prospects for pitcher Reed
Staff Report
In the midst of one of the franchise’s most disappointing seasons, the Mets made a move for the future, dealing Addison Reed to the Boston Red Sox for three pitching prospects.
Reed has served mainly as the Mets’ closer since Jeurys Familia went on the disabled list following surgery to remove an arterial clot and thrived in the role, posting 19 saves in 21 chances with a 2.57 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 49 innings.
The 28-year-old should bolster the back end of the Red Sox’s bullpen as they battle with the Yankees for first place in the AL East.
Reed has a $7.75 million salary and can become a free agent after the World Series. The Mets already have a replacement after acquiring Miami Marlins closer A.J. Ramos on Friday. Ramos is eligible for free agency after the 2018 season.
The Mets, meanwhile, acquired three right-handed pitching prospects — Stephen Nogosek, Jamie Callahan and Gerson Bautista — all rated among Boston’s top 30 by MLB Pipeline.
Nogosek, 22, went 4-4 with a 3.06 ERA and 19 saves in 36 appearances between the Red Sox’s Single-A affiliates in Greenville and Salem.
Callahan, 22, has appeared in 32 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket, compiling a 3.21 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 42 innings.
Bautista, also 22, possesses a fastball that tops out at over 100 miles-perhour and has a chance to be an end-of-game reliever for the Mets. He served a 50game ban for an anabolic steroid after Boston signed him in 2013 out of the Do- minican Republic and didn’t debut for 14 months after inking that deal.
