Doris Sutterley
Doris Sutterley, a Nurse’s Nurse, passed away peacefully in Wheat Ridge, Colorado at the age of 91. Born in Trenton New Jersey as Doris Harding Cook retired to Breckenridge in 1994 from Newtown, Pennsylvania to live with her family. She was a Breckenridge resident for over 13 years. Daughter Janet Sutterley, grandchildren John Koetteritz, Jacquelyn Koetteritz, Liam Kilgore and great grandson Jack Koetteritz, all of Summit County, survive Doris. She is preceeded in death by her late husband, Jack Sutterley.
She was a caring and vibrant mother and grandmother.
As an active member of the Summit Seniors and High Country Unitarian Universalists, her volunteer work included the community care clinic, Breckenridge Elementary reading program and docent at the railroad museum. She was an avid gardener and engaged member of the community.
Of special note was her remarkable life prior to Breckenridge. She attended the University of Pennsylvania where she earned both her bachelors and masters degrees in Nursing Science with specialization in psychiatric and mental health nursing and education. She continued postgraduate studies at New York University and women’s studies at Princeton University. She served as chair of the League of Women Voters in Bucks County and member in Hopewell Valley, NJ and Golden, CO.
Her long and distinguished career as nurse practitioner, nurse educator, author, editor and guest speaker were highlighted by many notable accomplishments:

Princeton Planned Parenthood Association: Executive Director, New Jersey Neuro-Psychiatric Institute: instructor and clinical specialist, Trenton State College: Director of Continuing Education and assistant professor, University of Pennsylvania: Associate Professor & Director of Psychiatric Nursing. Recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award
La Salle University: Associate Professor & Director of Continuing Education. Recipient of the La Salle University Nursing Honor Society Education Award, as architect of the continuing education program.
Doris later transitioned into independent consulting as co-author and editor of many nursing publications and had extensive guest lecture and speaking engagements. She was a pioneer in the field of stress management and a distinguished leader in the holistic health movement, integrating the concepts and practices of holism in nursing practice and education.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
