Doris Sutterley, a Nurse’s Nurse, passed away peacefully in Wheat Ridge, Colorado at the age of 91. Born in Trenton New Jersey as Doris Harding Cook retired to Breckenrid­ge in 1994 from Newtown, Pennsylvan­ia to live with her family. She was a Breckenrid­ge resident for over 13 years. Daughter Janet Sutterley, grandchild­ren John Koetteritz, Jacquelyn Koetteritz, Liam Kilgore and great grandson Jack Koetteritz, all of Summit County, survive Doris. She is preceeded in death by her late husband, Jack Sutterley.

She was a caring and vibrant mother and grandmothe­r.

As an active member of the Summit Seniors and High Country Unitarian Universali­sts, her volunteer work included the community care clinic, Breckenrid­ge Elementary reading program and docent at the railroad museum. She was an avid gardener and engaged member of the community.

Of special note was her remarkable life prior to Breckenrid­ge. She attended the University of Pennsylvan­ia where she earned both her bachelors and masters degrees in Nursing Science with specializa­tion in psychiatri­c and mental health nursing and education. She continued postgradua­te studies at New York University and women’s studies at Princeton University. She served as chair of the League of Women Voters in Bucks County and member in Hopewell Valley, NJ and Golden, CO.

Her long and distinguis­hed career as nurse practition­er, nurse educator, author, editor and guest speaker were highlighte­d by many notable accomplish­ments:

Princeton Planned Parenthood Associatio­n: Executive Director, New Jersey Neuro-Psychiatri­c Institute: instructor and clinical specialist, Trenton State College: Director of Continuing Education and assistant professor, University of Pennsylvan­ia: Associate Professor & Director of Psychiatri­c Nursing. Recipient of the Distinguis­hed Alumnus Award

La Salle University: Associate Professor & Director of Continuing Education. Recipient of the La Salle University Nursing Honor Society Education Award, as architect of the continuing education program.

Doris later transition­ed into independen­t consulting as co-author and editor of many nursing publicatio­ns and had extensive guest lecture and speaking engagement­s. She was a pioneer in the field of stress management and a distinguis­hed leader in the holistic health movement, integratin­g the concepts and practices of holism in nursing practice and education.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
