TRIVIA - ORLANDO

-

1. The Orlando area was once semi-populated with natives, but by 1842 that was taken care of when the U.S. fought and ousted this collective group of Floridian Indians.

2. That was when the Orlando area was part of this enormous county, which was named for Florida’s perennial bloodsuckers, which in turn were named by the Spanish.

3. After statehood, that county split up and the one for Orlando adopted this more tasteful title, inspired by the region’s traditional cash crop.

4. Orlando may’ve been named for a character in Shakespeare’s “As You like It,” a comedy with this famous five-word metaphor that starts the “seven stages” speech about life’s theatrics.

5. The city’s not all theme parks, as this space-grant university and UConn rival has a renowned aerospace engineering program and now the most undergraduates in America.

6. With its zoological theme, Disneyworld’s second non-resort attraction found visitors in Bay Lake for 25 years, but was deserted in 1999 with the opening of Animal Kingdom.

7. This other theme park company headquartered in Orlando, where it currently operates three theme parks, has seen a significant drop in attendance since its practices were criticized in a 2013 documentary.
