Nevada rallies past Nebraska to win Series

- Staff Report — Red Birch

SHELBY, N.C. » Rain continued to play the 2017 American Legion World Series Monday after New Jersey champion Hopewell Post 339 returned home.

The second semifinal only was able to get in one inning that night and had to be completed Tuesday before the scheduled championship game.

Creighton Prep, the only team which had not lost a game in the World Series, held off a strong challenge from Randolph County (N.C.) Post 45, 3-1, in that game, then returned to play Henderson (Nev.) Post 40 in the title game.

Creighton Prep, the lone returning team from the 2016 World Series, looked to be in good shape after having defeated Post 40, 9-1, in Stripes Division pool play.

But, this time around, Henderson and pitcher Shane Spencer had the team from Omaha, Neb.’s number, pulling out a 2-1 victory to earn its first World Series crown.

Spencer went the distance and scattered three hits, while striking out six. He retired the last 12 batters he faced, a streak which began in the bottom of the fourth inning after Lucas Ripa led off with a triple. Spencer kept the game tied at 1 by striking out Owen Richter and Nate Reiner before enticing Evan Laney to ground out.

Post 40, which finished 57-9, took the lead to stay in the top of the sixth when J.J. Smith singled and stole second base. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Creighton Prep’s Joshua Culliver, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Thompson.
