TRENTON » A dead body was found in a bag on the side of a capital city street Monday afternoon.

Witnesses at the scene said a female was found inside a plastic trash bag on the side of the road in the 400 block of Lamberton Street. However, the residents could not explain when and how the bag ended up on the side of the road.

A Trenton police spokesperson said officials received a call regarding a body inside a bag on the side of the road around 4:45 p.m. Monday. When officers arrived, they found human remains in the bag.

Officials say it’s too early in the investigation to say whether it is a homicide, yet detectives are certain the bag contained a deceased body. The person’s cause and manner of death are unknown at this time; those factors will be determined by a medical examiner.

The 400 block of Lamberton was shut down for several hours Monday. Numerous residents swarmed the block to see what may turn out to be the city’s 17th homicide of the year.

Lamberton Street is notorious for violent crime and open-air drug activity. Last month, 35-year-old Kryronne Hazel was shot in the 400 block of Lamberton, where residents say street hustlers often throw dice and play cards; he later died at the hospital.

In May, 56-year-old Robert Powell Jr., who lived on Lamberton Street, was shot and killed by Tyleeb Reese during a shootout with police on Centre Street. Powell, who was an innocent bystander, had walked the short distance from his home to a store on Centre moments prior to the deadly shootout.

Additionally, Lamberton Street drug busts regularly appear on The Trentonian’s daily police blotter.

Sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said finding a dead body in a plastic bag on the side of the street is “bizarre,” but it’s possible someone is sending a message and wanted law enforcement to find it there.

“Why else would it be dumped in the street?” a source asked.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Mercer County Homicide Task Force at (609) 989-6406. Or use the Trenton Crime Stoppers tip line at (609) 278-8477.
