Kids movies are the only theater visits for many parents

The last non-kid movie I saw in a movie theater was the 2010 Adam Sandler flick “Grown Ups.”

It was not good.

Since then, I’ve only sat through kids’ movies and the “Star Wars” movies, which I guess kind of count as “adult” movies but not really and besides I went with my son.

Bottom line: I don’t go to the movies anymore, which is nuts.

The reason I stopped back in 2010 was because we had one kid and another on the way and getting to the movies wasn’t easy. Furthermore, whenever we’d have a few hours to ourselves sans kids — which was rare — we didn’t want to spend it in a dark theater.

Fast forward to today. I’ve got OnDemand HBO STARZ Showtime Cinemax Netflix Amazon. I’ve got the movies at my fingertips.

And man, movies got costly. Going to see the “Star Wars” movies with a bucket of popcorn is like $30. That’s nuts.

Of course, there are some things about going to the movies I miss. There is a level of excitement you get, and some movies are just better suited to the giant screen.

But overall? Whatever. I don’t miss it.

I think a real test for the future of “going out to the movies” is going to come in 2018 when “The Irishman” hits Netflix.

Based on the book “I Heard You Paint Houses,” it’s about the murder of Jimmy Hoffa. Directed by Martin Scorsese. Starring Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano. So yes. A mob movie directed by Scorsese starring DeNiro, Pacino, and Pesci.

And it’s going straight to Netflix.

That sound you heard was every single man in America getting a Netflix account.

The movie theater will probably never go away, but it just doesn’t hold sway like it used to. Such is life.
