- Staff Report

One of the most iconic sports writers in Mercer County history is getting his just due.

Hamilton Mayor Kelly Yaede announced on Tuesday that the township’s three public schools — Hamilton West, Nottingham and Steinert — will compete with each other across all sports for the George O’Gorman Trophy.

O’Gorman, a Hamilton resident, spent 50 years covering Mercer County sports, most notably with the Trentonian.

“When you’ve spent 45 years in a job that never really felt like work you are a very lucky guy. I’ve been that lucky guy,” O’Gorman said. “Reporting on high school athletics at Hamilton, Steinert and Nottingham has allowed me to compile so many great memories of friendships with coaches, student athletes and administrators who have remained close friends. It’s why five decades covering Hamilton’s three public schools has been a love — because of all the coaches and athletes who made it happen.”

Nicknamed OGE, he had covered every state track & field championship dating back to 1976 and was on the Giants beat for the Trentonian from 1978 to 2015.

O’Gorman also worked for the Times of Trenton and Burlington County Times before finding a permanent home on 600 Perry Street at the Trentonian.

Each game among the three Hamilton schools for both boys and girls will be tracked over the course of the year with the school accumulating the most victories being awarded the O’Gorman Trophy.

Steinert achieved the most victories in the 2016-17 academic year and will accept the inaugural trophy during halftime of its football team’s night game against Nottingham on Friday, Oct. 27.

“I can think of no more deserving individual to receive this particular recognition than George O’Gorman,” Yaede said. “During the past 50 years, he has covered the games, matches and competitions that Hamilton high school athletes and their families will remember throughout their lifetimes. Thanks to his dedication and passion to high school sports, a half of century of amazing memories were recounted in ways in which generations of Hamiltonians will always cherish.”
