HAMILTON » A township elementary teacher’s shoplifting spree was apparently focused on hygiene.

Marisa Naro, 29, of the first block of Erica Lynne Way, was arrested for stealing $370 worth of soap, shampoo and toothpaste at the ShopRite on Route 33 in Hamilton on Sept. 10, police Capt. James Stevens told The Trentonian on Friday.

A loss prevention employee saw her exit the store with the bathroom products and she was stopped, Stevens said.

Naro, a special education teacher at Langtree Elementary School, was then arrested by Hamilton police and she was taken to headquarters, where she was processed and released.

Following her arrest, the district placed Naro on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.

Hamilton Superintendent Dr. Scott Rocco said Thursday that an employee was arrested, but he would not confirm his or her identity, calling it a “personnel matter.”

“We have been notified of the allegations,” he said. “We were notified the arrest was made.”

According to Naro’s classroom homepage, the teacher said it is her eighth year teaching in the district. Naro said it was her third year teaching at Langtree and that she has also taught at Sayen Elementary and also at Yardville Elementary as a resource room teacher.

Naro, a Hamilton resident, said she graduated from Steinert High School in 2006 and received her teaching degree from Rowan University. She has also taught summer programs at the Mercer County Special Services School District in 2008 and 2009.

According to records, Naro earned a salary of $48,974 last year.

However, combined with her husband’s salary, the couple earned more than $150,000 last year, which makes the alleged theft a head-scratcher.

Naro is married to Hamilton firefighter Anthony Naro. He is a captain in Mercerville Hamilton Township Fire District #2 for Station 12 and earned $104,075 last year, records show.

The teacher did not return a message seeking comment.

All the stolen goods were returned to the store, police said.
