The bracket for the 2017 Mercer County Tournament has been released and defending champion Lawrenceville gained the topseed.

The Big Red have won five of the last six MCT titles and have warranted the top seed with their performance in the first month of the season.

“We are really excited and honored to have the top-seed,” said Lawrenceville coach Lisa Ewanchyna. “We are always happy to have the chance to play in this tournament. It’s always a lot of fun and every game is a challenge.”

There are two play-in games that need to be completed by Thursday as the first round begins on Saturday.

The play-in games have No. 18 Nottingham going to No. 15 Steinert and No. 17 Hamilton heading to No. 16 West Windsor-Plainsboro North.

Some key first round games have No. 9 Hopewell Valley meeting No. 8 Lawrence. The Cardinals won the first game, 2-1.

There’s a township battle as Missy Bruvik’s No. 11 Stuart heads to her alma mater, No. 6 Princeton, for a first-round game.

The other top seeds are No. 2 Allentown and they meet the Steinert/Nottingham winner. No. 3 Robbinsville faces No. 14 Hun, No. 4 Notre Dame hosts No. 13 WW-P South, No. 5 Princeton Day entertains No. 12 Ewing.

No. 7 Hightstown faces No. 10 Pennington and Lawrenceville faces the WW-P North and Hamilton winner.

The seeding’s were done this year by a group of coaches and athletic directors instead of the previous method of just going by record.

“It’s great to have the seeding done by something other than records,” said Ewanchyna, who have not been the No. 1 seed in any of their MCT crowns in the last six years.

The quarterfinals are set for Tuesday Oct. 17 with the semifinals at Mercer County College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Mercer County College will host the final on Saturday Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
