LAWRENCE » Davon Hemingway and Tommy Tanner combined for five touchdowns and the Lawrence High football team won a flag-filled regular-season finale, 41-13, over West Windsor-Plainsboro South on Friday night.

Hemingway finished with 220 yards rushing on 17 carries and had touchdown runs of four, 24 and 35 yards.

His final two scores, both in the fourth quarter, secured the Cardinals (5-4) a victory after the Pirates (1-8) hung around for three quarters.

Tanner found paydirt on runs of five and six yards in the first quarter. He finished with 50 yards on eight carries.

WW-PS answered Tanner’s opening touchdown with a 55-yard scoring drive that quarterback Max Bruno capped with a one-yard keeper.

The Pirates thought they got the lead later in the quarter when Xavier Smith took an interception back 70 yards only for it to be nullified by a dubious pass interference call.

The teams combined to draw 28 flags from the officials.

Lawrence took advantage of its second chance and scored on Tanner’s six-yard plunge.

Hemingway scored the first of his three touchdowns with 25 seconds left in the second quarter to send the Cards to intermission with a 21-7 advantage.

William Johnson’s nineyard run pushed the lead to 28-7 before Bruno connected with his favorite target Anthony Taylor for a 30-yard score.

Taylor hauled in seven passes for 150 yards. Bruno completed 10-of-23 passes for 175 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Hemingway iced the game against a tiring Pirates defense with touchdown runs on back-to-back fourth quarter possessions.

Lawrence entered in playoff position in Central Group III, but its fate remains tied to Saturday’s Hamilton-Nottingham game with a Hornets victory likely enough to knock out the Cards.

Get out the gold and blue pom-poms.
