Rutgers rallies to even Big Ten record

- Staff and wire report

PISCATAWAY » Gus Edwards ran for 109 yards and caught a go-ahead 23yard touchdown pass with 7:30 remaining to rally Rutgers to a 31-24 victory over Maryland on Saturday.

Robert Martin scored on a 10yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter as the Scarlet Knights (4-5, 3-3 Big Ten) scored the final 14 points to come back from a sevenpoint deficit to post their third conference win in four games.

This one was not secure until Rutgers cornerback Isaiah Wharton broke up a fourth-down pass by fourth-string quarterback Ryan Brand to DJ Moore in the corner of the end zone.

Brand replaced Max Bortenschlager — the Terps’ third quarterback this season — after Rutgers went ahead on Edwards’ touchdown in the fourth. On the previous series, Bortenschlager took a big hit on a third-down run that came up short.

Gio Rescigno scored on a 9-yard run, Kiy Hester had a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown and Andrew Harte kicked a 50-yard field goal for Rutgers, which needs to win its final three games to become bowl eligible for the first time since joining the league in 2014.

Trailing 17-14 at the half, Maryland (4-5, 2-4) went ahead on the opening series of the second half on a 4-yard touchdown run by Ty Johnson. Henry Darmstadter added a short field goal to push the lead to 24-17 after a Rutgers’ turnover on a punt return.

After falling behind 7-0 late in the first quarter, Rutgers, which ran for 239 yards, scored 17 straight points in the second to take a 17-7 lead. PENN 38, PRINCETON 35 PHILADELPHIA » Will Fischer-Colbrie threw a touchdown pass with just over a minute to play that made the difference as Penn beat Princeton.

The Quakers (4-4, 2-3 Ivy League) trailed 35-31 when Fischer-Colbrie capped an 80-yard drive with a 15yard scoring pass to Justin Watson with 1:12 left to play. The Tigers (53, 2-3) got within field goal range on their final possession but Tavish Rice missed a 31-yard attempt.

Fischer-Colbrie finished with 202 yards and two touchdowns passing. Watson had 124 yards and two scores receiving and Abe Willows ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Penn led 17-7 at halftime and Fischer-Colbrie’s 36-yard throw to Watson pushed it to 24-7 early in the third. Princeton responded with two touchdown passes by Chad Kanoff and two scoring runs by Charlie Volker to take a 35-31 lead with 4:26 remaining.

Kanoff had 351 yards and three touchdown passes for Princeton. TCNJ 21, CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT 19 NEWPORT NEWS, VA. » Trevor Osler threw three touchdown passes and the Lions won their second straight game when the defense stopped the Captains on a two-point conversion with two seconds remaining.

TCNJ (3-6, 3-5) led 21-6 after Osler connected on scoring passes to Thomas Koenig and Jack Clevenger in the third quarter.

Christopher Newport (5-4, 4-4) rallied with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but failed to tie the game when the Lions defense forced an incomplete pass on a twopoint try.
