COPS: Parkingspace argument sparked shooting at Ewing deli

- By Trentonian Staff

An argument over a parking space may have been the motive behind a shooting that left a man with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Officials say Trenton and Ewing cops were sent to the 900 block of Calhoun Street around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday after learning that two men were fighting, one of whom had a gun.

When cops arrived in the area, they found a Chrysler Sebring crashed in front of 215 West Ingham Avenue, which is a few hundred feet away from the deli where the men were fighting. A .40 caliber handgun was found on the floorboard of the Chrysler, according to police.

Meanwhile, a Ford Crown Victoria was left abandoned in the deli parking lot. The driver of that vehicle was later determined to be a 28-year-old male who suffered a gunshot wound to his right thigh during the fight.

After being shot, officials say the victim continued to fight with the suspect, who eventually broke away, fled in his Sebring, which he crashed down the street, and then ran.

Officials say the investigation revealed the argument may have started over a parking space at the deli.

A short time later, police received a call regarding a possible suspect in the area of Berkeley Avenue, where they found 24-year-old Howard Poon, who appeared disoriented.

After a brief foot chase, Poon was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Poon is charged with attempted murder and related weapon offenses. After he is medically cleared, he’ll be taken to the Mercer County Correctional Center.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 609-882-1313. Or use the Ewing Police Tip Line at 609-882-7530.
