Assuming good health, 100 would be a nice age to live to

- L.A. Parker Columnist

One hundred years old sounds like a good age to leave here with stipulations that my death precedes the passing of my daughter and son.

Plus, mental stability would matter as well as reasonable physical capabilities.

Wearing adult diapers or smelling like urine sounds out of the question. So, control of bodily functions ranks as significant criteria for getting older.

Don’t want residence in a nursing home, especially in one of those places where attendants or nursing aides offer half-hearted care.

Several years back, a friend searched for a retirement facility for her mother.

Facility managers had residents performing trapeze acts, building cars with kitchen materials and dancing the lambada during a scheduled walk through.

We did a surprise visit later and every resident looked as if they were being prepared for a sequel to “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest”.

By the way, God bless those families dealing with difficult choices regarding elderly care.

Just remember that aforementioned script awaits just about everyone who lives long enough.

Would enjoy growing a nice garden with exotic plants, including Cuban Black tomatoes, several raspberry or blueberry plants and eggplants. And many days at the beach sounds perfectly wonderful.

Living forever never sounds appealing when allowed extended thought.

All those goodbyes to family members, friends and pets sound horrible; nothing hanging in the balance except another day to waste away.

Living forever as an earthling could present a perfect setting for procrastination. Tomorrow. Tomorrow.

A lifetime on crumby Planet Earth as a newspaper columnist? No thanks.

Plus, when this eternal longevity matter comes up, there’s always the frightening thought that the Minnesota Vikings might never win a Super Bowl in all that time.

Now heaven, that’s an entirely different scenario.

This column has provided an awakening. It’s time to start living and loving, every minute and second.
