Series History: Princeton leads 1-0

Background: The Tigers and Mustangs meet for the second time as Princeton begins its road trip by returning Cal Poly’s visit to Jadwin from last season.

Wild West: While those left on Old Nassau are shoveling snow, the Tigers are soaking up rays in California as part of a 10-day, 5-game west coast swing. After battling Cal Poly on Saturday, Princeton faces USC in Los Angeles and then flies to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic over the Christmas holiday. Princeton hammered the Mustangs last year in the Garden State, and will once again be favored, although the remainder of the trip looks daunting. The Tigers’ opener in Hawaii comes against Middle Tennessee State, a NCAA Tournament team last season.

Right Rotation: Coach Mitch Henderson has finally seemed to find a group of five that fits together. The big three — Amir Bell, Devin Cannady, Myles Stephens — are a given, but the other two spots have been totally up for grabs. It appears freshmen Sebastian Much (6-8, 225) and Ryan Schwieger (6-6, 220) have stepped up to claim the crunch time minutes, or at least that’s what Henderson indicated after he went with that group to close out the final 8:58 in the win over Monmouth. Look for Alec Brennan, Mike LeBlanc and Richmond Aririguzoh to still be in the mix, too. Scouting Cal Poly: The Mustangs flew east for a one-off against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Florida and came away with a loss. Cal Poly has struggled from the field in its last two contests, both losses, shooting under 40 percent. Donovan Fields averages a team-high 15.6 points per game on 44.4 percent shooting. He’s also a perfect 28-for-28 from the free throw line. Victor Joseph (13. 9 ppg) shoots the 3 at 34.3 percent, but he’s attempted a team-high 67 shots from long range.
