EWING » Mya Grimes had a whole offseason to think about the nine points she needed to reach a milestone.

She made sure to check that goal off before the end of the first quarter in the Ewing High girls basketball team’s season opener.

Grimes scored 22 points and went over 1,000 for her career with a layup at the 1:21 mark of the opening quarter.

“I’m not nervous anymore about trying to score the nine points that I needed,” Grimes said right after the Blue Devils beat Hightstown, 84-21, on Friday night. “I knew everyone was here (to celebrate), but it was great though.”

When Grimes notched the milestone basket she was presented with her framed No. 10 jersey, flowers and balloons.

Now that it’s out of the way, Grimes can focus on what should be a fabulous senior campaign before heading off to High Point University.

“Our goals for this team is to win the championship,” Grimes said. “That’s all we’ve talked about, and we hope that we make it. But also to work as a team and build our relationship stronger.”

Ewing (1-0) reached the Group III semifinals last season before a heartbreaking loss to Ocean City.

Grimes said that moment has motivated her all offseason.

“That foul shot,” Grimes said. “That’s what motivated me and the team. Those were our mistakes, and we had to work on it over the summer.”

Kiyla Peterson and Jentle Sheridan had 13 points apiece for the Blue Devils, who scored 33 straight after the Rams (0-1) tallied the game’s first basket.

Grimes made her first five shots from the floor to reach 1,000. She finished 10-for-15 before exiting midway through the third quarter.

“I’m working on my handling and my shooting because I know (what) I can do in the post, so I’m trying to change my game up,” Grimes said. “Post positing is always going to be important, but I’m trying to learn and do different things.”
