HAMILTON » A man from the capital city was arrested Saturday night after two people were shot during a carjacking gone awry.

Cedrick Hodges, 34, of Trenton, is charged with attempted murder, carjacking, aggravated assault and weapons offenses following an incident that left two people injured from a shotgun blast.

Officials say the incident started in the 2300 block of South Broad Street around 9:20 p.m. when a male — later identified as Hodges — jumped in the rear passenger seat of a woman’s car and demanded the vehicle. The 53-year-old victim told cops she had just parked the car, and that she ran and called for her husband’s assistance after realizing the suspect had a sawed-off shotgun.

When the husband arrived on-scene, officials say, Hodges fired at the 49-year-old man. Neither of them were hit by gunfire, but the married couple told police they heard a second gunshot as they fled.

While searching the area, officials say, a cop saw two males fighting in the 200 block of Lafayette Avenue. One of those males turned out to be Hodges, who matched the suspect description provided by the Hamilton couple, according to police who say the other person was a 67-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to his arm.

Officials also say Hodges had a shotgun in his possession when police saw him fighting the other male, but he fled with the weapon upon seeing cops.

Police later found the shotgun in an alley between Lafayette and Harrison avenues.

Hodges was eventually apprehended near the corner of Genesee and Lily streets.

Officials say cops were later told another gunshot victim, who was presumably injured by the second shotgun blast, had arrived at the hospital. That victim, a 25-year-old Trenton resident, suffered gunshot wounds to the arm and chest. The severity of his injuries is unknown at this time.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the carjacking and shooting is asked to contact police at 609-6895823. Or use the Hamilton Police Crime Tip Hotline at 609-581-4008.
