TRENTON » The man whose lifeless body was pulled from the Delaware and Raritan Canal on Tuesday afternoon has been identified as Daquan Williams, officials confirmed.

The 22-year-old Trenton man was near death when he was pulled by rescuers from the canal and he later died at the hospital.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and a police spokesman didn’t respond to a phone call requesting additional details.

Officials said a woman called police after seeing the man treading water in the canal near the end of Jarvis Place. The woman was in her house when she heard someone

screaming and then looked outside and saw a man in the water.

After deploying boats and divers, fire personnel found Williams and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 5:38 p.m.

The canal has seen a lot of action lately. In October, another city man, 51-yearold Anthony Richardson, also drowned in the canal after he jumped in near Old Rose Street and Holland Avenue.

Earlier this month, a 16-year-old city teenager took a plunge in the canal after fearing for his life when he saw three individuals hop out of a car near West State Street, start walking toward him aggressively and heard one shout street slang that made him think they were about to rain bullets down.

The teen had to be pulled to safety by another city resident who drove him to the hospital. Police are investigating and haven’t announced any arrests.

One of the suspects allegedly shouted at the teen, “What’s up?” The teen walked faster away from the trio, who matched him pace for pace. Then he heard one shout, “Yo, bust ’em.”
