Giants complete first week of GM interviews
The Giants held four interviews this week for the organization’s general manager position, concluding Friday with Kevin Abrams.
Abrams, 43, has been the assistant GM for 16 years and the interim GM since the Giants fired Jerry Reese on Dec. 4. Abrams met earlier this week with team chairman Steve Tisch, then was interviewed Friday by team president John Mara and former GM Ernie Accorsi, who is a consultant on the selection process.
“I think everyone would want this job,” Abrams said last week.
Accorsi, the Giants’ GM from 1998-2007, appointed Abrams as assistant GM after Abrams served as the Giants’ salary cap analyst for three years beginning in 1999.
Abrams manages the team’s salary cap, is the organization’s main negotiator for player contracts and collaborates with the college and pro personnel departments to evaluate players in preparation for free agency and the NFL Draft.
“My role has been more than just doing the cap stuff,” Abrams said last week. “I wasn’t raised to be a cap guy. It was just the opportunity that was given to me and I was grateful of the opportunity. The Giants do a great job with everyone — not just me. But we’re all encouraged to grow professionally and like everyone else, I was getting a lot of opportunities to do that and I try to take advantage of them whenever I could. And a lot of that included being involved with our personnel departments.”
Marc Ross, the Giants’ vice president of player evaluation, was the first to interview for the permanent GM position on Monday.
Former Carolina Panthers GM (2013-17) and Giants pro personnel director (1999-2012) Dave Gettleman interviewed Tuesday, followed by current ESPN analyst and former Eagles/Redskins front office executive Louis Riddick on Thursday.
Riddick, 48, is so far the only candidate with no prior ties to the Giants.
The Giants cannot interview candidates currently employed by other teams until after the regular season ends Dec. 31.
