Martin Luther King Jr. events around Mercer County this weekend
The Arts Council of Princeton celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an ambitious day of activities set for Monday, January 15.
Multidisciplinary performances, interactive workshops, discussions as they relate to Dr. King’s life, teachings and civic engagement and breakfast highlight a free event collaborated on by Princeton University, the Historical Society of Princeton and Kidsbridge.
Attendees can expect mixed media art projects appropriate for all ages while The Historical Society of Princeton will present “Open Archive”, a presentation of materials related to segregation in Princeton with the Curator of Collections and Research.
First Baptist Church Choir will perform followed by a film screening of Teach Us All, a documentary and social justice campaign on educational inequality set against the backdrop of the 1957 Little Rock school crisis.
Schedule: 9 - 11 a.m. – Free Community Breakfast with speakers Princess Hoagland of Not in Our Town Princeton and Monique Jones of Princeton Public Schools 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. – Hands-on art and history activities for all ages
2 - 3 p.m. – Live performance by the First Baptist Church Choir
3 - 5 p.m. – Screening of Teach Us All

Elder Lois Key-Alexander, co-pastor of the Life Abundant Church of God of Trenton, will give the keynote speech at the 37th annual scholarship breakfast honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Hosted by the Ivy League Educational Foundation, Inc., the charitable arm of the Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 15. 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Princeton at 102 Carnegie Center, (off of Route #1 north) Princeton, New Jersey 08540. On Saturday, Jan. 13 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., the Servants Endeavoring to Empower and Develop Youth Program (SEED) Male Mentoring Program, in conjunction with E.E. Jenkins Ministries, will celebrate that history and present the 8th Annual SEED MLK Breakfast, “We Are The Dream”, at Cedar Gardens, 661 Route 33, in Hamilton Township.
The 2018 honorees are Leslie Summiel Jr., Trenton NAACP ACT-SO, Tamiko Green, East Trenton Committee and Kimme Carlos, Urban Mental Health Alliance. The keynote speaker is Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

Trinity Cathedral hosts a “Day of Service” on Monday, Jan. 15 as The Right Rev. William “Chip” Stokes, Bishop of New Jersey presides.
Rev. Angelo Wildgoose, Rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Plainfield performs the Eucharist. The offering collected will go to Anchor House Trenton, an organization dedicated to providing shelter, safety, support and strength to runaways.
Guests are asked to bring a canned good for Trinity Cathedral’s Food Pantry.

•Crafting knot blankets for Project Linus
•Decorating placemats for Meals on Wheels
•Making get well cards for Children’s Hospitals

•Making paracord bracelets for Project Gratitude
