This is the weekend Samantha Widmann looks forward to the most once the Ivy League schedule is announced.

It’s a homecoming for the former Notre Dame High star as Cornell travels to Penn on Friday and then Jadwin Gymnasium to face Princeton on Saturday

“The excitement never ends,” said Widmann, a sophomore of the trip to Princeton. “Just being able to see family, friends and my old coaches. My high school is so close and it’s great they come out to support Cornell basketball.”

Widmann, who is the Big Red’s leading scorer with 15.5 points per game, is coming off a double-double the last time out against NJIT and will be looking to help Cornell make it two straight in Jadwin.

The Big Red is 4-9 overall, but riding a two-game winning streak as they open the Ivy season at Penn on Friday and then Princeton (11-3, 1-0 Ivy) on Saturday. The Princeton game is at 4:30 p.m. as part of a women’s and men’s doubleheader.

Cornell has just one senior and Widmann has stepped in and been one of the leaders on this young team.

“It’s a completely different atmosphere and it’s great being able to work with the players we have now,” said Widmann. “We are all here for each other on and off the court and that’s what makes it so much fun to play with these girls.”

Widmann had 23 points and a career high 14 rebounds in the NJIT win to record the second doubledouble of her young career. The first was last season in a win over Harvard when she had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

“The record has been a little rough,” said Widmann. “But we are growing and things are starting to fall into place. After the last two wins we are feeling confident and working on the things we need to focus on.”

Being an Ivy League school there’s always the academic end that needs focus, too.

Widmann is an Agriculture and Life Sciences major and is finding a way to manage her time with the help of her coaches and teammates.

Widmann calls Cornell, “the best choice I ever made,” but she sure does enjoy those trips home to family and friends. tackles.
