Murphy needs inclusivity and compassion to be successful

- L.A. Parker Columnist

Phil Murphy made a second appearance at Shiloh Baptist Church yesterday, just hours before taking an oath as the 56th governor of New Jersey.

Murphy, visited on Election Day eve in early November then returned for a multi-faith prayer service. He follows on the heels of Gov. Chris Christie, who left with record low approval ratings.

Taxes, pensions, marijuana legalization, transportation, making New Jersey a sanctuary state, and a litany of other issues appear on Murphy’s horizon.

And yet, a hope here is for Murphy to lead boldly. Being point person for any initiative requires that the front man or woman delivers inspiration for people to deliver their best.

Murphy must draw an expanded circle which eventually gives opportunity to disenfranchised citizens.

Murphy must engage the masses, not simply recite a popular line about middle class America. So, inclusivity and an understanding of people and their plights remains tantamount to a successful first term.

First days of first terms offer hopes, dreams and positive energy no matter the political party in power. Excitement? Sure. All maiden voyages tether dreams and idealistic desires.

Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, the first woman of color to hold that position, glowed in her accomplishment during her inauguration speech.

“We make history not in the moment but in what we do with it,” Oliver noted.

Murphy, Oliver, city council members, mayors and other government leaders are charged with important responsibilities to govern with transparency and honesty.

If they can engage us, give us inspiration to join in the process and to make a difference in our homes, streets and neighborhoods then we the people will have the government that we deserve.

Murphy referenced moving in a “new direction” during his inauguration speech which included that the work of his administration “will be about you.”

Finally, Murphy underscored his vision with this important insight.

“We do not succeed unless we all succeed together,” he said.
