Bush, Osler are DelVal college scholars; Jenkins top little scholar

- By Rich Fisher

Aside from the 22 high school players being recognized for their ability on the football field and in the classroom, so too are a pair of local collegiate players and a guy whose high school career is still in front of him.

Princeton University’s Dick Bush, The College of New Jersey’s Trevor Osler and 8thgrader Jayson Jenkins will be among the special honorees at the 56th Annual George Wah Scholar-Leader-Athlete Awards Dinner. The event, hosted by the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, will be held March 11 at the Hyatt Regency in Princeton, beginning at 4 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $75 apiece and a full table of 10 can be purchased for $750. Contact Ron Hoehn at annronhoehn@gmail.com or 609-731-6610 to order tickets through Mar. 4. Or, visit the website at http: //www.delvalfootballfoundation.com.

Bush is receiving Princeton’s Judge Arthur Lane Scholar-Leader-Athlete award after a standout career with the Tigers. He made Academic All-Ivy League after starting 10 games at center and helping Princeton post the second-ranked passing offense in the Football Championship Subdivision, along with the fourth-ranked total offense and scoring offense in the nation.

Bush worked his way onto Princeton’s twodeep depth chart as a freshman, developed as a center on JV as a sophomore and had a significant number of snaps as a junior in helping Princeton win the Ivy League title. Bush was this year’s winner of the Richard W. Coleman Award, which honors scholarship, athletic skill, team contribution and sportsmanship among Princeton seniors.

“Dick played for one of the best high school programs in the country and one of the coaches there, John Few, is a Princeton alum who raved to us about this young center’s knowledge of the game,” Tigers coach Bob Surace said. “Indeed, Dick was advanced enough to get on the field as a freshman after we suffered some injuries and then played a little more as a sophomore.

“When Dick was elevated to the number one job this season, his confidence soared. His calls, communications and skills shot way up. I’m grateful we had 12 players recognized on this year’s All-Ivy teams, but I had one big disappointment. I think Dick played as well, if not better, than every center in the league.”

Osler has been named TCNJ’s Earl H. Dean Scholar-Leader-Athlete winner. He was named second-team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference this past year after completing 61 percent of his passes for 2,047 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Cherokee High School grad passed for over 4,100 yards in his career.

Academically, Olsen has a 3.81 grade point average and made the Dean’s List six times. The Mechanical Engineering major is team leader for an Aero Design Project and is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

Jenkins, a Bordentown resident and 8thgrader at St. Raphael School in Hamilton, is being awarded the DelVal chapter’s Little Scholar Award.

Jayson fell in love with football at age 4. It’s in his blood as his grandfather, Willis Crenshaw, is a former NFL player. During a nineyear career with the Bordentown Bulldogs of the West Jersey Youth Football League, Jenkins played quarterback, running back and offensive and defensive line while competing at every weight class.

He is hoping to play college ball for his favorite team, Ohio State, and should have the grades to get there if he keeps going at this rate. An honor roll student, he placed fourth in the Trenton Catholic Academy Scholastic Olympics for Social Studies. Jason is a member of Jack and Jill of America and was part of Toastmasters International in 2015.

As for high school, Jenkins is looking into Notre Dame, The Lawrenceville School and Moorestown Friends.
