Trenton honored by Mercer County Freeholders
TRENTON » The Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Trenton Central boys basketball team for its outstanding season on Thursday.
Coach Darryl Young’s Tornadoes finished 22-8 and captured the Central Jersey Group IV sectional championship with a remarkable run in the playoffs, which included three straight road upsets.
“As a Trenton resident, I know firsthand how this community rallies around the Tornadoes, and that is what makes this Sectional Championship run so special,” Freeholder Samuel T. Frisby said in a statement. “I’d like to personally congratulate Coach Young and his players on a great season and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors on and off the basketball court.”
Trenton was the No. 7 seed in the CJ IV bracket and after a home win over East Brunswick, produced an upset over No. 2 Hunterdon Central thanks to a once-in-a-lifetime comeback before completing its sectional triumph with victories over No. 3 Hightstown and No. 1 Colts Neck.
The Tornadoes’ season ended with a 51-40 setback against Shawnee in the Group IV semifinals.
“We went from boys to grown men,” senior captain Jy’Air Brown, who was a First Team All-CVC selection, said after the game against Shawnee. “We fought a lot of adversity during this run. We were doubted a lot, but we all stuck together and made it happen. We didn’t get what we wanted, which was a state championship, but we came a long way.
“Our city hadn’t see that in a long time, so to bring that kind of excitement to your city and to your people, it’s a joy.”
The Freeholders presented the team with sealed certificates of honor to commemorate its season.
