Local standouts help raise money for Sunshine Foundation
A slam dunk and 3-point shooting contest for local high school basketball stars raised $3,200 for the Sunshine Foundation Mercer County Chapter.
WBCB (1490 AM) radio hosted the event at Trenton Catholic Academy with all proceeds collected to benefit the Sunshine Foundation of Mercer County Chapter. The organization hosts a Dreamlift on May 1 as a private plane transports approximately 100 handicapped and special needs children for an all expenses paid trip to Disney World.
Trenton Catholic Academy continued a school history of philanthropy as some of the area’s top hard court athletes competed. TCA students have played a major role in raising funds for another organization, Christine’s Hope For Kids.
Kudos to the student athletes who contributed their time and talents during a fun-filled competition that delivered Allentown’s Ryan Weise as girls 3-point champion, Hightstown’s Jamal Anderson claimed the boys title and Cartier Bowman of Notre Dame sparkled for his slam dunk title.
Anderson edged Weise in a 3-point showdown which needed a one-rack of five balls shootoff addition after the two tied after 20 shots. Anderson prevailed 5-4, hitting a final two-point money ball for the win.
Bowman, an Irish senior, had set the stage with bravado.
“I got my friends here from Notre Dame. I’ve got something planned that’s really funky. It’s my first slam dunk competition and I expect to show out,” Bowman said.
Bowman soared over three classmates and delivered a stunning dunk that posted a perfect score of 50 points.
“It was an honor to be involved with the very first WBCB Slam Dunk contest to benefit the Sunshine Foundation. Having visited their dream village in Florida, to know that this event helped children with disabilities to visit Disney World is very rewarding and humbling,” Bill Rednor, WBCB account executive said.
“It would not have been possible without the help of numerous people, especially Sister Dorothy and her staff at Trenton Catholic Academy. Our Sports Director Sam Goldberg came up with the idea for this and he was helped by a lot of people.”
