Steinert’s Whittaker tosses 2-hit shutout for win

LAWRENCE » Behind a dominating performanc­e by junior Kaylee Whittaker, the Steinert softball team downed Notre Dame, 2-0, Wednesday in eight innings.

Whittaker completely shut down the Irish with a two-hitter and 12 strikeouts. Steinert had only four hits itself against Alexis Staniec, but did a huge two-run double from Cora Bridgers in the eighth. Alex Haley singled and doubled for Steinert. Lawrencevi­lle took the lead in the fourth when Alyna Balewitz tripled and Kat McGrath followed with a home run. Ashton Martini won it with a homer in the seventh.
