Yankees’ Drury begins indefinite rehab in Trenton

TRENTON » Brandon Drury batted third and played third base Friday night for the Thunder — the latest step in his continued rehab since landing on the 10-day disabled list April 7 with what the Yankees termed “severe migraines.”

Before being transferred to Trenton, Drury began his assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In 26 at-bats across eight games he batted .385 with two doubles, three walks and seven strikeouts. He committed three fielding errors in one of the games.

Manager Jay Bell said prior to Friday’s game against Harrisburg that Drury has no limitations physically, but he will consult with the 25-year-old to see how he feels as his stay in Trenton progresses.

“He’s full-go. He can play as long in the game as the game proceeds,” Bell said. “If we go extras, he’s free to play every day. There’s no restrictions at all.”

Bell added that it is simply a matter of Drury, acquired from the Diamondbacks in February, “getting his reps before it’s time to go up and help the team.”

Still, the duration of Drury’s stay is a mystery. Given the extended nature of his rehab already, the Yankees’ dilemma appears

to be equal parts urging caution with Drury’s health and the organization deliberating the next course of action with the big-league roster.

Promising prospect Miguel Andujar, currently Drury’s replacement at third base, was impressively sporting 16 extrabase hits — 12 doubles — in 95 at-bats entering Friday. Utility man Ronald Torreyes has also performed relatively well with his reps at the position, while infielder Neil Walker (.171 batting average) has been a bust free-agent signing to this point.

“He probably won’t be asked to play that 10:30 (a.m.) game (next) Wednesday,” said Bell, whose Thunder play six games in six days at home. “But I don’t know. It may be a couple games. It may be several, so I don’t know. I haven’t been told yet.”

Bell has had conversations with Drury, GM Brian Cashman and the Yankees’ medical staff about the nature of Drury’s migraine headaches and blurred vision, which the parties insist are no longer an issue.

“It’s been something that he’s dealt with in the past, and they’re taking care of it,” Bell said. “He’s doing some treatment right now that has been working, and he said he feels great.”

Right-hander Joe Harvey and left-hander Ryan Bollinger also were transferred from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Trenton on Friday. Lefthander Justus Sheffield, the Yankees’ No. 3 prospect, and right-hander Hobie Harris officially moved up to Triple-A.
