A Mother’s Day note from the Mayor

- — Mayor Eric E. Jackson

As Mother’s Day approaches, I want to share my thoughts on the importance of moms in the lives of their family and children and why their lessons are essential, including their prayers, their hopes, and their dreams.

It is from this place that we build identity and strength.

On Mother’s Day, my Mom Mrs. Gladys Jackson, the bedrock of our family and the radiance of our values, will have passed into eternal life in 2016. She was not a dominating and overbearing woman, but a strong black female who was strict in her teachings, tremendously generous with her love, and protective of her children’s education and futures.

Mom worked hard and made sacrifices so that our lives would be better.

Few people in our lives do that, so it’s important to let your Mom know you appreciate her.

Many, many times she encouraged me and my brothers and sisters to undertake meaningful tasks that would enrich our lives, our community, and be true to what she taught us—to be kind, to be honest, to be ethical and to be true to our Christian faith, and to always act from poise, grace, and class.

So, as you bestow bouquets of flowers and other gifts upon Mom this Sunday, remember that her prayers sustain us in her profoundly important role ordained by Him. Have a happy Mother’s Day.
