Olosunde makes USMNT debut in friendly win

Matthew Olosunde can check off his first cap for the United States soccer team.

The Trenton native came on as a 73rd-minute substitute and helped the U.S. finish off a 3-0 victory over Bolivia in a friendly at the Union’s Talen Energy Stadium on Monday night.

Olosunde was one of six players to earn their first appearance in the game. He replaced captain Eric Lichaj and played the last 17 minutes at right back.

The 20-year-old is on the books at Manchester United, where he’s been used primarily as a fullback in the reserves, but he’s still waiting for his firstteam breakthrough.

Olosunde got his start in Trenton’s Mooch Soccer program before moving on to the Princeton Soccer Association and then the Red Bulls Academy where his parents used to drive him two hours to training and back.

The U.S. is beginning a youth movement after failing to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. The average age of the squad called in by interim coach Dave Sarachan was 22 years, 286 days.

Walker Zimmerman’s header gave the American’s the lead in the 37th minute before secondhalf strikes by Josh Sargent and Tim Weah made for a comfortable victory.

The U.S. plays a pair of friendlies in Europe — at Ireland and at France — before taking a break for the remainder of the summer. Sarachan could change up to as many as 10 players for those two games.

A Yahoo! Sports report indicated the federation is set to hire former national team player Earnie Stewart away from the Union as its general manager.
