Giovi, Stewart pairing leads Mercer Senior Better Ball
WEST WINDSOR » First-round of the Mercer County Senior Better Ball Tournament delivered a predictable leader and usual suspects as contenders Lou Giovi and partner Bill Stewart delivered six birdies and one bogey for a 5-under-par 67 at Mercer Oaks East GC.
Still, Giovi and Stewart could not shake completely free of challengers as Ed Erickson and Ray Pyontek shared second-place with Rob Ortiz and Gene Goudy, both squads in with 3-under-69.
George Matucheck and Nelson Diaz produced a similar advantage in Super Senior play as the newly partnered tandem shot 4-under-par 68 good for a two-shot lead over Ansley Jessup and Bill Turner as well as Tim Megargle and Bruce Seaman. The Super Senior division leaders carded seven birdies and three bogeys.
A limited field offered weekend play to the top eight teams in each division. Open Division competitors play from the Blue Tees while Super Seniors play one spot up from the White Tees.
Play continues Saturday and Sunday.
